Newfoundland and Labrador doubles its PNP allocation for immigration

Six months after requesting an increase in its PNP allocation for immigration, Newfoundland and Labrador, an Atlantic Canadian province, has doubled its yearly immigration from 1,500 to 3,050 people.  According to the latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the province welcomed 3,495 new permanent residents in 2022, representing a 70.9% increase from the 2,045 new immigrants in the previous year. To date, the province welcomed 1,585 new permanent residents in 2023. If immigration continued rising at that rate for the whole of 2023, Newfoundland and Labrador would welcome 9,510 new immigrants this year. From the 1,120 new permanent residents that came to its shores in 2015, Newfoundland and Labrador has more than tripled its level of immigration as of its most current year’s numbers. The province is finally having a population increase after years of demographic loss, which is mostly attributed to immigration. The population of Newfoundland and Labrador hit 531,948 on the first day of this year, which is the highest level in more than twenty years, according to the province’s own figures. BC invited over 200 skilled candidates under the BC PNP recent draw

On May 16, 2023, the Government of British Columbia issued new invitations under the BC PNP recent draw and invited qualified Skills and Immigration candidates.  In the general draw, the province invited 162 candidates. The minimum score for candidates invited to this draw was 85-107 points.  The province issued 29 ITAs to candidates under the childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202).  In the Healthcare-targeted draw, BC invited 11 candidates who scored 60 points.  In total, the province issued 202 ITAs in this draw. On May 2, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the minimum required income for the Super Visa applications. The new minimum income requirement represents an increase of over 3.33% compared to the previous year.  The minimum required income for a single-person family unit is C$27,514, while the minimum required income for a two-person family unit is C$34,254.  The Super Visa allows Canadian permanent residents and citizens to invite their parents and grandparents to come to Canada for a stay of up to five years, possibly extending their visit to another two years. Canada experiences an increase in the number of internationally trained nurses seeking employment opportunities

Canada’s provinces are making it easier for internationally trained nurses to work in the country by shortening registration and licensure processes. Atlantic Canada’s Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) has introduced an expedited process for applicants from seven designated countries: the Philippines, India, Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.  The new process reduces the processing time for nurses licensed in other parts of Canada from five days to just one and for internationally trained nurses from the designated countries from months to a few weeks. Over the three weeks, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held new IEC draws in the pools of International Experience Canada (IEC). From May 6 to May 12, Canada invited 4,880 young foreigners to apply for an IEC open work permit. As of May 12, there were 20,421 candidates registered in the pool, waiting for the invitation.
