Three Canadian Universities Rank Higher in the 2024 QS World University Rankings

The University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia ranked in the top 34 of the 2024 QS World University Rankings. International students often rely on rankings to choose the best Canadian university for their needs.  In the 2024 rankings, the University of Toronto moved up to 21st place, McGill University ranked 30th, and the University of British Columbia ranked 34th. These rankings are based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, and international ratios. McGill University McGill University (McGill) was ranked 31st in the QS World University Rankings in 2023. McGill received high marks – all above 87.5 – for academic reputation, employer reputation, and both international ratios for 2024. McGill has two campuses in Quebec and has been ranked among the top 35 universities in the world by QS since 2012.  Faculty/Student Ratio: 64  Citations per Faculty: 62.1  Employer Reputation: 87.6  International Faculty/Student Ratio: 88.9 (Faculty) and 93.3 (Student) University of British Columbia The University of British Columbia (UBC) was ranked 47th in the QS World University Rankings in 2023. However, in the 2024 rankings, UBC created a significant leap, increasing 13 spots to 34th place. The outstanding academic reputation, employer reputation, and international faculty ratio of the university are key contributors to this remarkable progress. UBC received an impressive 81.5 in the overall assessment. Prior to this year’s rankings, UBC had never been ranked higher than 43rd by QS. About the QS World University Rankings The QS World University Rankings assign ratings to 1400 post-secondary institutions based on a five-factor strategy. Here’s an overview of the parts and their influences: Academic reputation (40%): is based on surveys of professionals involved in higher education teaching and research. Faculty/student ratio (20%): QS believes that institutions with low student-to-faculty ratios and small class sizes offer a more personalized and collaborative learning environment. Citations per faculty (20%): This component counts the number of times articles written by faculty members at an institution have been cited in the past five years. It indicates the institution’s credibility in the field of academic publications. Employer reputation (10%): Inquiries with employers around the world drive them to name universities. They assert the development of highly employable graduates both locally (up to 10) and globally (up to 30). International faculty/student ratio (10%): This factor evaluates the proportions of international faculty members to domestic faculty members and international students to domestic students. Data is acquired from universities and reviewed against government records where possible, with each sub-ratio receiving a 5% weight in the total rating. Prince Edward Island invited 102 candidates through the PEI PNP

On October 19, 2023, Prince Edward Island held new draws under the PEI PNP. The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) invited 102 candidates in the Labour Impact and Express Entry streams. Another two invitations were sent to Business Impact Category candidates. The lowest score for the business candidates was 80. In total, PEI issued 104 invitations in this round.  The next draw is scheduled for November 2, 2023. Since the beginning of 2023, the PEI PNP issued 2,142 invitations. Among them, 54 invitations were under the Business Impact Category, and 2,088 were under the Labour Impact and Express Entry categories. Ontario to introduce a new program for recognizing foreign-trained physicians

The second intake period for Ontario’s assessment program for foreign-trained physicians for family and general practitioners will begin in early January next year.  Practice Ready Ontario (PRO) simplified the process for internationally-trained physicians to practice in Ontario by accepting applications from June 21 to July 19 this year.  Results were sent out in the second week of August. Those who missed the first intake or did not receive a positive result can now apply for the second intake if they meet the requirements.  The program includes a 12-week clinical field assessment in an assigned Ontario community to evaluate applicants’ readiness for independent practice. About the Practice Ready Ontario (PRO) Practice Ready Ontario streamlines the application process for internationally trained physicians who have completed postgraduate education and have independent practice experience in family medicine or as a general practitioner outside of Canada. Practice Ready Ontario is a good thing for the people of Ontario and for internationally trained physicians who want to work in the province. The initiative allows internationally trained physicians to become licensed more quickly. Hiring more physicians is the most effective way to ensure that you and your family can visit a doctor when and where you need it. Through the first cohort alone, Practice Ready Ontario will provide more family physicians in high-need areas; all successful candidates are expected by the provincial government to complete a three-year return of service as a family physician. Nova Scotia announced a new pilot program for construction workers

The Government of Nova Scotia announced a new pilot program for construction workers to boost growth in the skilled trades and modernize the apprenticeship and trades qualification system.  Premier Tim Houston has announced measures to add 5,000 new apprentices in the next three years, increase the number of journeypersons and trades qualifiers by 1,000 annually, and raise the apprentice retention rate from 43% to 60% within five years.  The Critical Construction Worker Pilot, part of Nova Scotia’s Provincial Nominee Program, will include 21 in-demand occupations in the construction sector, focusing on residential building trades. The popularity of the Start-Up Visa (SUV) increased in August as 175 new permanent residents settled in Canada through the program, a 29.6% increase from July.  Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has planned to admit more Start-Up Visa applicants, increasing from 1,000 per year in the past few years to 3,500, 5,000, and 6,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025, respectively.  This increase in immigration through the SUV in August was notable, considering the spike in immigration in July. BC held new invitation draws and issued over 150 invitations

On October 17, 2023, the Government of British Columbia held new invitation draws under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) and invited qualified Skills Immigration candidates.  In the general draw, BC invited 104 candidates. The minimum score for candidates invited to this draw was 91-113 points.  The province issued 31 ITAs to candidates under the childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202).  In the Healthcare-targeted draw, BC invited 17 candidates who scored 60 points. In addition, fewer than five invitations have been issued for other priority occupations (NOCs 31103, 32104).  In total, British Columbia issued up to 157 ITAs in this draw. This year, British Columbia has already invited 8,385 candidates. Canada Welcomed 700,000 New Temporary Residents in Just One Year

On September 27, 2023, Statistics Canada reported that the number of temporary residents in Canada has increased by nearly 700,000 year-on-year as of the second quarter of 2023. This number is expected to reach 2.5 million by the end of 2023.  Many of these temporary residents seek Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) through Canada’s economic immigration options. However, the number of PR spots available is limited compared to the number of temporary residents in Canada.  Canada has set an annual target of 465,000 for all immigration programs in 2023, with a target of over 500,000 by 2025. Sudbury considered new applications in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program

On October 13, 2023, the City of Greater Sudbury held a new round of invitations for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program. In this round, Sudbury considered 33 candidates, including two candidates drawn through the Francophone Stream.  The lowest score of these draws was 235 points, five points lower than in the previous draw.  Last year, Sudbury invited a total of 154 applicants. Since the program’s launch, the city has recommended around 520 individuals under the RNIP. So far, the city has considered 412 candidates in 2023. About the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is an initiative driven by the local communities. By offering a path to permanent residency for highly talented foreign workers who wish to live and work in one of the participating communities, it aims to expand the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities. On October 6, 2023, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) updated the processing times for the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications under various streams.  Updated LMIA application Processing times are: Based on statistics from all processing centers, the current average LMIA application processing times have increased only for the Low-wage Stream.  Global Talent Stream – 9 business days Agricultural stream – 11 business days (-1 day) Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program – 6 business days (-3 days) Permanent residence Stream – 58 business days (-5 days) In-home caregivers – 25 business days (-5 days) High wage Stream – 40 business days Low-wage Stream – 45 business days (+1 day) If you’re an employer and looking to get an LMIA or hire a foreign skilled worker for your business get an assessment with Gunness & Associates About the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) Before hiring a foreign worker, a Canadian business may be required to get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). A positive LMIA will demonstrate that a foreign worker is required to fill the position. Additionally, it will demonstrate that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is qualified for the position. A confirmation letter is another name for a positive LMIA. The worker can submit a work permit application after the employer receives the LMIA.   Applicants for work permits must meet the following requirements: a job offer letter,  a contract,  a copy of the LMIA, and  the LMIA number Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process with ESDC Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) determines whether hiring a foreign national will have a positive or neutral impact on the Canadian labor market. The effect of the specific occupation designated by the employer on the labor market is the subject of assessment by ESDC, not whether the foreign national meets the occupational requirements.
