The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) has issued 122 Applications and got its 2022 quota allocation, which is nearly three times the numbers they were able to manage in the past. On June 29, 2022, the Government of Ontario held new draws in the Employer Job Offer Streams: Foreign Worker Stream (EJO FW), International Student Stream (EJO IS), and In-Demand Skills Stream (EJO IDS) of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).   The province issued 2 invitations to apply (ITAs) to the eligible candidates through the EJO FW Stream, and 424 ITAs under the EJO IS Stream with a minimum score of 74. Under the EJO IDS, the province invited 293 candidates with a minimum score of 24. In the first six months of 2022, Canada issued the lowest number of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the history of its flagship Express Entry selection system as the Government of Canada attempted to clear the backlog affecting its entire immigration program. The first half of 2022 will be remembered as the era Express Entry went on vacation since Canada turned to its pool of previously submitted applications to provide a steady stream of new permanent residents towards its goal of approximately 432,000 newcomers this year. On June 21, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that IRCC would finally resume all-program draws on July 6. He also promised to return to the six months service standard. The last draw for FSW and FST happened in December 2020 and then it was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The same happened to CEC draws in September 2021 due to an increased processing backlog. Canada has been facing a massive challenge in keeping skilled workers. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is still receiving proposals for new Investor streams, which aim to provide immediate economic benefit to Canada. However, according to the last issue of Lexbase, these plans all fall short of addressing the risks that are always involved with investor initiatives. Based on Canada’s prior experience with investor immigration programs and the present program integrity difficulties still faced by IRCC, the Department of Immigration decided that investing in permanent residency programs at this time is not a good idea. We are asked will IRCC launch new Investor Streams? Investors may use existing and developing channels to enter Canada, such as the Federal Start-Up Visa program or provincial initiatives for entrepreneurs. Start-up Visa Program Requirements Business requirements Once a designated organization commits to your business: all applicants (up to 5 people can apply as owners) must each hold at least 10% of the voting rights attached to all outstanding shares of the business; and together with the designated organization, they must hold more than 50% of the voting rights attached to all outstanding shares of the business. Once you receive permanent residence, you must make sure that: you play an active role in the ongoing management of your business while living in Canada; the essential operations of the business must partly take place in Canada; and your business is incorporated in Canada. Letter of support You must get a letter of support from a designated organization that proves they are willing to invest in and support your start-up. These organizations include: Venture Capital Firms ($200,000 investment); Angel Investor Groups ($75,000 investment); and Business Incubators. On May 24, 2022, the Government of British Columbia issued new invitations under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) and invited qualified Skills Immigration candidates and Tech workers. In the Tech-targeted draw, BC issued 115 invitations, with a minimum score of 85 points. In the Childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 4214), the province invited 11 candidates. In the Healthcare-targeted draw, BC invited 11 candidates. The lowest score of those candidates was 60 points. In total, the province invited up to 137 candidates. Immigrant entrepreneurs desiring to obtain permanent residency in Canada through the Start-Up Visa program will need to show they have more settlement money than necessary last year. The amount required for a single applicant has risen by $97, from $13,213 in 2021 to $13,310 this year as a result of the most recent hikes.  Each number of family members has seen similar little increases in costs over time. This is the case even if the family is not coming to Canada with the applicant.
