immigration targets

Canada may reconsider immigration targets

Canada’s Housing Minister and former Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, hinted that the federal government may consider changes to the country’s high immigration targets. Fraser emphasized the need to align immigration policies with the absorptive capacity of communities, including housing, healthcare, and infrastructure.  He also suggested that the government should collaborate with other levels of government and institutions to consider immigration targets carefully. Fraser specifically mentioned the need to review the temporary immigration programs to ensure that they operate sustainably and not in an “uncapped way” based solely on demand. However, before making any changes, Fraser stated that the federal government would need to consult with other levels of government, as deciding which institutions accept international students is a matter for provincial governments, as well as institutions that have “a duty to play a part in housing the people who come here.” He also emphasized that discussions about addressing the country’s housing crisis should not be limited to immigration. “It’s critical that when we look at solutions to our housing challenges, we also consider what we can do to increase supply,” the minister said. “I believe it is critical to remember that immigration remains one of Canada’s most powerful competitive advantages in the global economy.” Overview of the Canada immigration targets 2023-2025 Canada is currently aiming to accept nearly 460,000 new immigrants each year under its Immigration Levels Plan, the highest level in its history. The immigration goals of Canada are to boost the economy, reunite families, and assist refugees.  In 2022, IRCC will welcome almost 437,000 immigrants to Canada. Canada’s newcomer target for 2023 is 465,000 new permanent residents (PRs). Canada plans to admit an additional 485,000 immigrants by 2024. Another 500,000 new permanent residents are expected by 2025. internationally educated healthcare professionals

Canada attracts more internationally educated healthcare professionals

Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan had the highest percentage of internationally educated healthcare professionals (IEHPs) working in their fields in 2021, with 74%, 68%, and 67%, respectively.  Ontario had attracted the most significant number of IEHPs, with 116,310 residing there in 2021. IEHPs were most likely to be nurses, with one-third studying nursing.  The fields of study varied by province, with: Prince Edward Island has the highest percentage of IEHPs studying nursing at 53%,  Newfoundland and Labrador has 30% trained to be physicians, and  Ontario has the highest proportion of IEHPs studying dentistry at 10% or pharmacy at 9%. Internationally educated healthcare professionals (IEHPs) in Canada According to the report’s authors, “There were an estimated 259,695 internationally educated healthcare professionals (IEHPs) aged 18 to 64 residing in Canada in 2021, accounting for 13% of all Canadians in the same age group with post-secondary education in a health field, excluding temporary residents.” These IEHPs in Canada’s healthcare system were most likely nurses. “About one-third of IEHPs in Canada studied nursing,” according to the survey. “Those who trained to be physicians came in second at 15%, followed by those who studied in the fields of pharmacy at 8% and dentistry at 8%.” The significance of immigrants to provincial healthcare systems and their specific fields of study varies significantly across Canada.  The great majority of these healthcare professionals, seven out of ten, are women under the age of 50.  “About half of IEHPs immigrated to Canada between the ages of 25 and 34,” the research said. “Nearly one-third of all IEHPs had arrived in Canada recently (between 2016 and 2021).” Registered nurses with a university degree in nursing, registered psychiatric nurses with a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in psychiatric nursing, and licensed practical nurses with postsecondary degrees in nursing are all accepted in Canada. DACA

Canada may recruit DACA recipients

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program that protects and provides work authorization to immigrants brought to the US as children. Over 570,000 Dreamers are currently protected by DACA and are productive members of the American economy.  However, the program is in legal limbo as Congress has failed to authorize permanent protection, and Republican states are suing to terminate it.  Canada is actively recruiting immigrants with US work experience or education and could also attract DACA recipients, highly educated and qualified workers.  Canada’s Express Entry system could be a viable option for Dreamers, who would be competitive candidates. If Canada poaches Dreamers, the US will face significant economic losses as Canada reaps the benefits of highly productive US-trained immigrants. Canada has stepped up its efforts in recent months to deliberately recruit immigrants with prior education or work experience in the United States. Canada and its businesses have long benefited from the dysfunction of immigration laws, from creating a new visa for specialized foreign workers in the U.S. to starting specific campaigns for people frustrated with the American immigration system.    Although Canada hasn’t openly made an effort to entice DACA recipients to move to the north, it might not be long before it does. DACA recipients would be excellent candidates for Canadian visa pathways like the point-based Express Entry program, which seeks to attract the best and brightest from all over the world.  Join our RSS Feed    Want to know more details about “IRCC announced a new update for Student Direct Stream applications” you can contact one of our immigration specialists at  Gunness & Associates.   Tel: (416) 604-2669  Email: info@test.immigrationmatters.info   Gunness & Associates has helped thousands of people successfully immigrate to Canada with their families. Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot boosted the local economy of Thunder Bay

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot boosted the local economy of Thunder Bay

A study by the Northern Policy Institute found that last year, the RNIP helped boost Thunder Bay’s economy beyond simply assisting foreign nationals in finding jobs and settling into their communities. In one year the program offered:  229 jobs to its applicants,  generated 92 other jobs in the local economy, and  a total of $11.6 million in wages.  The RNIP is growing at a fast pace, welcoming 1,425 foreign nationals to gain permanent residence in Canada in the first half of 2023. The program’s effectiveness has led Ottawa to increase the number of foreign nationals allowed to immigrate to some of the communities in the program.  The RNIP aims to recruit skilled immigrants to work in smaller communities with aging populations and labor shortages through the five-year program, which is expected to become a permanent immigration program soon. RNIP welcomed 1,345 new permanent residents to Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia last year. By the end of the first half of this year, the program has already surpassed those immigration numbers by about 6%, granting permanent residence to 1,425 foreign nationals. “I’ve seen firsthand the importance of this program throughout our region,” Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe said. “Not only has the program directly addressed gaps and challenges such as labor shortages, but it also continues to drive economic prosperity for our communities in ways that will have a generational impact,” says the program’s director. “I’ve heard personally from employers how helpful this program has been in attracting workers, growing and expanding businesses, and creating economic opportunities in our communities.” “From my perspective, the Rural and Northern Immigration Program has been an enormous success,” stated then-Immigration Minister Sean Fraser earlier this year.   What is the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot? The impact of global immigration on Canada

The impact of global immigration on Canada

The impact of global immigration on Canada, there has been a notable increase in migration to high-income countries, according to economists. Global North countries, including Canada, have seen a fast rise in their foreign-born population. Canada’s population growth rate of 2.7% in 2022 is the highest among the G7 countries and is among the top 20 countries in the world.  Canada’s population increased by more than one million people, marking the first time in the country’s history that the population has increased by such a large number in just 12 months, and it is the highest annual population growth rate recorded since 1957. Most of this growth, 95.9%, can be attributed to international workers moving to Canada. Canada’s population could double in just 26 years if this trend continues. Record-high population growth in 2022 On January 1, 2023, Canada’s population was expected to have increased by a record 1,050,110 people, raising the total to 39,566,248. This is the first year in Canadian history that saw a population increase of over one million, and it also represents the highest annual population growth rate (+2.7%) since 1957 (+3.3%).  Due to the large number of births during the post-war baby boom and the large influx of refugees after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, the population growth rate in 1957 reached a record high. The cause of Canada’s record-high population growth in 2022 was considerably different because overseas migration was responsible for nearly all of the rise that was observed (95.9%). As it has been for many years, Canada will continue to have the highest population growth among the G7 nations in 2022. Canada would come in first with a population growth of 2.7% for the year 2022 when compared to country growth rates for 2021 from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the most recent data available for all members. Moreover, Canada’s population growth rate of 2.7% in 2022 would rank it in the top 20 nations in the world, based on the most recent data available for other nations (as of 2021). Almost all of the African nations have faster population growth rates. Such a rate of population increase would cause the Canadian population to double in around 26 years if it remained steady in the coming years.   The impact of Temporary immigration on Canada’s growth 437,180 new immigrants were expected to enter Canada in 2022, and there is expected to be a net gain of 607,782 non-permanent residents. Both of these figures reflect greater immigration targets and a year in which Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada received more immigration applications than ever before, representing the highest levels ever recorded. The projected increases in temporary residents for 2022 are the highest for a single year for which comparable data are available. Additionally, for the first time, these gains exceed those made by immigrants during the same period. The net expected number of non-permanent residents in all provinces and territories increased year over year in 2022, with work and study permits as well as the number of asylum seekers increasing overall. This surge is the result of a number of causes, including the program established to accept individuals fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the previously indicated intention to use international migration to assist satisfy labor shortages around the nation.  Join our RSS Feed    Want to know more details about “The impact of global immigration on Canada” you can contact one of our immigration specialists at  Gunness & Associates.   Tel: (416) 604-2669  Email: info@test.immigrationmatters.info   Gunness & Associates has helped thousands of people successfully immigrate to Canada with their families.
